Once nicknamed “The Country Club District,” Forest Park is brimming with both beautiful homes and charming shops. This storied area unfolds from the rock-rimmed crest of Red Mountain into the surrounding valley. Its stately mansions, which have been home to some of Birmingham’s most prominent figures, are only part of the area’s charm.
Your Guide to Forest Park
Drive through the historic district’s 231 acres of rolling hills and shaded streets, and you’ll discover a handsome enclave like no other. Birmingham real estate and civic leader Robert Jemison, Jr. first broke ground on what would become Forest Park in 1906. More than a century later, the area has held its charm and blossomed into something more than just pretty homes (though there are plenty of those to see).
Walking through the streets of Forest Park today, you’ll see decades of history in the fabulous architecture but also, like much of Birmingham, a rebirth. Previously vacant spaces and old homes have turned into restaurants and shops loved by locals. Drive down Clairmont Avenue, and you’ll see vibrant character on every corner.
The neighborhood’s original design, established more than 100 years ago, still stands today. The only difference is that a new wave of residents has moved in — bringing along their own brand of beauty. Here’s how to eat, drink, and shop your way through Forest Park!
Where to Shop
Mark Thompson and Jay Draper own the beloved Shoppe, a garden store perched high on a hill inside a restored bungalow. Rows of verdant plants line Shoppe’s walls. Outside, a greenhouse greets patrons. It’s the perfect spot to pick up something green or a special gift for a friend, like a scented candle or a coffee table book. The pair also took over the spot next door, opening General, a neighborhood cafe and general store serving up tasty lunch and unique giftables.
Along that same street, you’ll find a handful of shops and eateries, including MK Quinlan, a retail studio carrying a collection of curated high-end vintage clothing, jewelry, unique home objects and decor, art, and books, as well as Dreamers Supply Co. The shop sells locally-made bags, travel essentials, art prints, apparel, and accessories. Walk over to women-owned apothecary Dream Boat for clean beauty products, teas, essential oils, adorable hair accessories, and home goods.
Where to Eat & Drink
If you’re looking for a delicious cocktail, Juniper is a must. Their gin-focused menu features a selection of unique concoctions for any palette. A favorite is the Buzz Word which includes jasmine, lemon, sweet vermouth, apricot liqueur, and New Amsterdam Gin. Their happy hour features $6 cocktails, $3 beer, and wine starting at $9. Additionally, their selection of elevated bar food is worth the try.
Wine enthusiasts should head to Red or White, an intimate wine shop offering a vast collection of affordable and high-end bottles. The shop is also open for tastings and a wine bar experience featuring small bites like bruschetta topped with fresh goat cheese, tomatoes, and olive oil. You can also enjoy charcuterie plates, fire-roasted oysters, pizza, and more. Shop the store, pick out a bottle, and the Red or White team will serve it for a $10 fee.
Finish up your day of exploring at one of Forest Park’s most popular dining options, The Rougaroux. This quirky local’s favorite offers an authentic taste of New Orleans. Gumbo, boudin, specialty po’boys, and muffuletta are a few of the standout options on the menu, and the laidback atmosphere makes the spot an easy choice for a good meal with good company. We suggest snagging a spot on the patio!
Stroll through Forest Park’s charming sidewalks, grab a bite and shop a bit. We bet you’ll fall in love with this neighborhood too!
