More often than not, when I mention the word ‘trend’ to my style coaching clients, they quickly tell me trends aren’t for them. They prefer something age-appropriate, classic, or more unique than what everyone else is wearing. And while I completely understand where they are coming from, I love helping them better understand how trends can work for them, no matter their age, style, or silhouette.
Before I became a Style Coach, I was a trend forecaster in New York City. This job allowed me to learn where trends come from, which ones have longevity, and how to select the right ones based on both your lifestyle and your personal style. I apply this knowledge daily and am excited to help break down three of the most wearable trends for this fall.
3 Fall Fashion Trends to Try in 2022
Bold & Bright Colors
The first trend is BOLD and BRIGHT. Fashion designers were ready for an infusion of happy, joyful hues, and they didn’t want to save them for the spring. Fuchsia, sunset orange, emerald green, sunflower yellow, and amethyst dominated the fall collections. If you prefer a more neutral color palette, try weaving one of these hues into your accessories. Bringing in a pop of color via a silk scarf or shoe can be just the right touch.
If you are feeling braver, try a vibrant blazer or blouse. If you’re a color-wearing enthusiast, you can even try a head-to-toe look of fuchsia and orange for a truly fabulous (and very on-trend) vibe. If you select the perfect dose of color for your personal style, you’re sure to feel the difference it makes in your wardrobe — and maybe even your approach to the day ahead!
Blazers
A personal favorite trend of mine is SUIT UP. While I don’t work in a corporate setting, I do love a good blazer with a pair of jeans for work. Depending on your career, a blazer might be an everyday staple. Whatever your lifestyle, know you can rock a blazer if it suits your style.
This classic piece is no longer merely an accompaniment to trousers; it can be tossed on over a dress or paired with jeans, ankle pants, or even a midi skirt (as long as the proportions are correct). This season’s blazers are tailored, come in different lengths, fabrications, and colors, and have all sorts of fun details. The best part is that many blazers come in stretchy fabrics that allow comfort and polish to coexist!
If a blazer isn’t your look, you can opt for a cropped cardigan, as they are also having a big moment this fall season. You can learn more about the ins and outs of cardigan styles HERE.
Remember, trends are all about cherry-picking the ones that make the most sense for your personal style, and then styling them to best flatter your body type.
Leather
Leather used to be something to invest in. Thankfully, there are so many vegan and faux leather options out there now that this fall fabric is more accessible than ever before. While a leather jacket is always in style, designers have really branched out. We are seeing leather tops, leather joggers, leather shirt dresses, leather pleated midi skirts, and beyond. Select the type of leather garment that most resonates with you, and run with it. If leather isn’t your thing, go for a pretty leather belt to complete your outfit.
These days, leather garments often have more stretch and shape to allow for a more flattering look — similar to blazers. That also means you may want to assess any leather pieces in your closet from years past that may not serve your body type or lifestyle anymore.
While there are a sea of trends in the stores every season, my invitation is to be more purposeful in what you buy. It’s easy to buy something that “everyone is wearing” or that the well-meaning sales associate said you “simply have to have.” But in reality, you know your style and what feels authentic to you. I recommend adding one to three trends per season. That will keep you looking and feeling current but help you avoid going overboard. Not every trend is suitable for every person, and that’s okay.
