From shiplap to ornate fireplaces to mosaic tile, builders and interior designers often add a unique design feature to one wall for dramatic effect. An eye-catching statement wall is a perfect way to infuse creativity into your space, break up the monotony, and add some “wow” factor. We asked a few local experts to share some of their standout statement walls, and they didn’t disappoint. Here are five amazing focal point walls that inspire, each with memorable features.

A Modern Loft with a Mural

A statement wall often makes smaller spaces feel bigger and more open. In fact, utilizing focal point walls is often a helpful design trick when it comes to maximizing an apartment or limited living space. In this Parisian loft remodel by Brad Ramsey Interiors, a mural in the master bedroom offers a subtle but notable detail. “In design, we’re always looking for the perfect design impact without overdoing it,” owner and designer Brad Ramsey says. “A focal wall does just that.”

“In a bedroom, the bed wall is always the point of interest and a perfect place to add a bold feature,” offers Brad Ramsey of Brad Ramsey Interiors. “Even if you choose a soft design, it can still add the perfect impact.” Image: Showcase Photographers

A Cozy Sitting Area with Reclaimed Wood

Often, a statement wall brings a dose of warmth to a space where it’s lacking. In this sitting area designed by Beth Haley Design, reclaimed wood offers texture and a rustic element to create an even more comfortable reading nook. “Use reclaimed wood on a wall, combine a mixture of textures, or play up an architectural element — such as a brick wall — to add energy and another pattern to a room without overwhelming the space,” suggests owner and designer Beth Haley.

An Art-Infused Family Room

A museum draws our attention with beautiful pieces of perfectly placed art. It’s a simple design approach when it comes to our homes, too, allowing for a display of cherished memories or paintings while also adding character to an otherwise blank canvas. In this family room addition, JoAnne Haynes of J. Haynes Interiors created a gallery wall over an antique console table. “The owners spent their summers in Maine and have collected many stunning local scenes from that area over the years,” explains JoAnne. “These pieces hold fond memories, and the homeowners want to enjoy the Maine landscapes in their new family room. They are an important statement that tells a much larger story when grouped.”

A Child’s Room with Classic Wallpaper

Adding a standout paint color or patterned paper to one wall of a room can create a focal point wall that disrupts the uniformity and adds depth. This young girl’s bedroom designed by Jessica Jennings of Jessica Jennings Design boasts wallpaper that offers the perfect balance of youthful fun and understated sophistication. “We selected one of my all-time favorite papers, ‘Chou Chou’ by Sister Parish. It’s youthful but also classic,” Jessica tells us. “We wanted it to be something she enjoys now and also as she grows older.”

“As a designer, I feel like focal walls — when used correctly — are a great way to create interest and conversation,” says Jessica Jennings of Jessica Jennings Design. “They also add a special touch to make a client’s home unique to them.” Image: Kristen Mayfield

A Mirrored Media Room

Van Mol Restoration owner Derek Van Mol says he loves working with clients who have a clear vision for their space, and that’s certainly the case in this fabulous media room, where a massive vintage piece was used to accentuate the stairwell landing and reflect the homeowner’s style. This approach shows how a functional element, such as a mirror, becomes a stunning and unique focal point when used as a wall centerpiece.
