Much like fashion, trends in makeup and beauty change frequently. While it’s important to curate a makeup collection that works for your specific skin type and desired everyday look, embracing a trend can be a fun and fleeting way to keep things fresh.
There are no rules when it comes to makeup, only individuality. But if you’re looking for some inspiration on how to shake up your routine while staying on trend, we caught up with Mary Kathryn Hudson, vice president of sales and marketing for Therapy Systems, which encompasses The Cosmetic Market and Private Edition Cosmetics, to explore five beauty trends that are easy, wearable and fun.
Trend #1: Bare Face, Glowing Skin
In contrast to the full glam makeup that defined most of the 2010s, beauty is trending toward a more bare-faced, glowy look. While we know it’s not truly “bare-faced,” there are a number of light coverage foundation options and natural products that help achieve a flawless finish without thicker products.
Perfect for everyday wear, dressed-down occasions, or a relaxed vacation style, the minimal makeup look actually starts with the skin. Maintaining a consistent skincare routine will help ensure the canvas for makeup application is in the best shape it can be.
“Use a gorgeous and glowing primer,” says Mary Kathryn. “When you do that, it almost acts like a filter with your skin, so everything is blurred.”
Mary Kathryn suggests pairing a primer with a tinted moisturizer to achieve a beautiful, bare look. “Then, you can go in with a little bit of color after that, but make the brows look nice and natural.”
Looking for products to help you achieve this look? The primers we recommend are Supergoop! Glowscreen ($36), a sheer base with SPF to help prep the face, or the Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Illuminating Glow Face Primer ($50). For a tinted moisturizer, check out The Radiant SkinTint from LaMer ($110) or Kevyn Aucoin Stripped Nude Skin Tint ($42).
Trend #2: Bold and Glossy Lips
In contrast to a bare-faced look, bold and glossy lips are also trending in beauty this year. With spring on the horizon, adding a pop of color in the form of a fun lip can be a great way to welcome warmer weather.
“You can go super fun with a bright pink or a magenta for the color of the year, a pretty glowy and glossy red, or a natural, ‘your lips, but better’ color,” Mary Kathryn shares. “You can still do the bare-faced trend and then pop your lip.”
Adding a bold lip color to your makeup bag is a great way to have fun with trends and change up your daily look for a smaller investment than other items. We recommend ByTerry Lip-Expert Shine ($34) in any color, or the Therapy Systems Poppy Lip Gloss ($28).
Trend #3: Blush
Blush is back! Whether we have six more weeks of winter or warm, sunny days are right around the corner, blush provides a beautiful sunkissed pop of color with just the swipe of a brush. Complementing both the bare-faced trend and a bold lip, a carefully matched blush can be transformative.
“I love it; it really warms up your face,” Mary Kathryn shared. “I love cream blushes. They help achieve that natural look.”
Cream blushes give a more dewy finish and can act as a blush and highlighter in one, while powder blushes are more matte and can last longer during the day. Therapy Systems Cream to Powder ($28) offers the best of both worlds: it applies as a cream but dries into a powder.
Trend #4: Shimmering Lids
Shimmering lids are no longer reserved for New Year’s Eve. For a fun special occasion look, consider adding a sparkle, a bronze, or a bold color to the lid to draw attention. After all, the eyes are the window to the soul, so let them shine!
“As women get older, there’s a misconception that you can’t do a shimmer or shine on your lids,” Mary Kathryn shares. “I think the opposite. I think matte is aging. Glowing skin equals younger skin, and a shimmer is always gorgeous.”
A shimmering shadow can be another lower-cost item to elevate your makeup bag, allowing room for experimentation. Grab the Therapy Systems Eye Glaze ($28), available in subtle metallics, or the crease-proof collection of Eyelights Cream Eyeshadow ($28) from RMS Beauty.
Trend #5: Monochromatic Look
Each of these trends can be used simultaneously to achieve a monochromatic look, where one color is used across focal points on the face — think a shimmering pink lid, a pretty pink blush, and a subtle pink lip.
“We’re seeing this a lot in clothing, too, where the look is super simple, pulled together, and classic,” says Mary Kathryn.
Using the same product can even keep a tonal makeup look. For example, Smashbox offers a Halo Cream Cheek + Lip Tint ($28), a blendable product that can be used as both a blush and a lip color.
While trends may fade, these beauty fads are simple and achievable by adding a few fun items to an existing routine.
“Fashion and makeup can be overwhelming,” Mary Kathryn added. “In everything we do, there are trends. Think about it like a wardrobe: you have your core basics, then you can add a few trendy things. You’ll invest in certain things you’ll wear year after year, but each season you’ll add in a couple of things that make it fun.”
